MUNFORD served as Colonel Deputy Commissary General of Issues, 18 JUN 1777 to a William Green MUNFORD wrote his will 08 FEB 1786 and it was probated 03 MAY 1786.

John BELL advertised in the Virginia Gazette and offered a twenty dollar reward for the return of Jesse NEW, who had deserted from the 6th Virginia Regiment at Fredericksburg on its march to the northward; NEW was described as "a slender made fellow, about 20 years old, about 5 feet 9 inches high, of a fair complexion, with sandy coloured hair, and a freckled face." A Private Jesse NEW served at Valley Forge in the 6th VA Regiment, Capt. John Hockaday's Company. He is listed as "Fit for Duty" in April and May 1778 and "On Command" in June 1778. Ogilvie, the Rector of Westover Parish, is listed in this roster as a Patriot because of his service on the Committee of Safety, but he is more properly described as a Loyalist. OGILIVIE filed a claim with the British government for loss of income stating that when he refused to take the rebel test oath he was turned out of the parish and ordered to leave Virginia. He left his family here and returned to Englland where he was appointed a chaplain on a ship of war.

Enlisted in the 1st Virginia Regiment under Col. PARKER and apparently served in both the north and the south, although he was sick much of the time. In Land Bounty Warrant Application John BELL states that he enlisted PARRISH for successive two and three year terms in the 6th Virginia Regiment. PARRISH died before 19 SEP 1833 when certified in court as a Revolutionary War soldier; died intestate; daughter only heir: Elizabeth PARRISH who had married John. F. BROWN. Sergeant William PARRISH served at Valley Forge in the 6th VA Regiment, Capt. Thomas Massie's Company. He is shown as "On Command" in Dec. 1777

He is shown as "Fit for Duty" from Feb. through June 1778. Applied for a pension in 1833 from Rockingham County, North Carolina. He stated that he was born 02 MAY 1763 in Richmond, Virginia, but raised in Charles City; he volunteered in the Charles City militia as a minute man in the year 1776 when he was about the age of 14 years and continued enrolled in that capacity until the close of the war; he was first called out soon after his enrollment and marched under Capt. Collier HARRISON to Hampton, Va. and joined the regiment commanded by Peter ROYSTER; Major Stith HARDYMAN was also attached to the same regiment; during this tour he was engaged watching Lord DUNMORE, who was then lying with his ships in Hampton Roads and that his company had frequent skirmishes with foraging parties from these vessels; in this capacity he served as a private three months; his second tour was under Capt. William ROYAL, also of Charles City; in this tour his company was principally engaged in suppressing a ______ insurrection of the Negroes in that and the adjoining counties; and that he served in this company as a private three months; he was next called out under Capt. HARWOOD and stationed at Charles City Courthouse under the command of Major GREGORY for the protection of that place, but was at length surrounded in the night by the British light horse owing to the cowardice of HARROD and GREGORY, both of whom were afterwards disgraced; most of the men was cut to pieces or drowned in a neighboring mill pond; in this company he served as a private at least two months before its dispersion by the enemy as aforesaid. His next tour was in Capt. Edward MAYNARD's company, which after joining Major William WHITE's command at Charles City Courthouse

marched near to Bermuda Hundred to watch the British in this service he was occasionally marched into Henrico and Prince George counties and had frequent skirmishes with parties of the enemy and on one occasion took two boats and killed and took 84 men; this affair took place opposite to Bermuda Hundred at a place called Shirley Hundred; he was afterwards taken prisoner by the British Light Horse and placed on board a prison ship at Bermuda Hundred from whence he made his escape in a small boat. In this tour including his imprisonment he served as a private at least three months. His next tour was under the same Capt. William ROYALL

and was marched to Chesterfield Courthouse where they joined Gen. NELSON's command and was marched to Osborns where they joined Baron STEUBEN and then marched to Petersburg where they had a sharp encounter with the British under Gen. PHILLIPS, but had to retreat. In this tour he served as a private three months. His sixth and last tour he marched from Charles City Courthouse to Little York under the command of Major Stith HARDYMAN and there joined the brigade of Gen. Thomas NELSON and was at that place during the siege. After the surrender of Lord CORNWALLIS he remained at Little York a considerable time and was engaged in leveling the entrenchments, moving carrion from on board British ships, piling ball &. In this tour he served at least three months. He stated that beyond these tours he served several others of shorter duration. One under Capt. RYAL and marched to Sandy Point on James River and was engaged in guarding a vessel loaded with flour intended for the American army at Valley Forge. This vessel was blockaded by the enemy below who made many attempts to cut her loose, but was beat off nine or ten times and the vessel ultimately moved and got out. In this duty he served at least months. He was frequently called out during the war for various reconnoitering parties in which nothing particularly happened. He has been affected with a paralysis for the last 20 years; that he knows of no other person with whom he served by the name of PHILLIPS except his father, James PHILLIPS who served during the whole war and in the same company. He married Elizabeth MOORE in North Carolina and died there 10 AUG 1838.

William POYTHRESS served at Valley Forge in the 1sth ART Regiment, Capt. John C. CARVER'S Company. He is shown as "On Roll without Comment" in May and June 1778. It is unclear if this is the same man.

Member of Charles City County Committee of Safety, organized 17 DEC 1774; 18 MAY 1776 was appointed by the Continental Congress as Director and Chief Physician of the Hospital in Virginia in the Service of the Continent. He resigned this position on 21 OCT 1780 and later became Deputy Director of Hospitals for the Southern Department, resigning in 1781. A will for Wm. RICKMAN was written 03 JAN 1791 and probated 17 NOV 1791. His second wife, Elizabeth HARRISON (1751-1791) was the eldest daughter of Benjamin HARRISON of "Berkeley." He is buried at "Kittewan." In 1784 his widow was awarded 6666 2/3 acres of land for his service as a Colonel of the Continental line. She later married John EDMONDSON and lived at "Milford" In her will, 03 MAY 1790; 20 JAN 1791, she requested to be buried beside Mr. RICKMAN and the cemetery enclosed within a brick wall.

John BELL advertised in the Virginia Gazette offering a reward of twenty dollars for the return of Thomas ROACH who had deserted from the 6th Virginia Regiment at Fredericksburg on its march to the northward; ROACH was described as "about 24 years old, 5 feet 4 inches high. dark complexion, and wears his own hair, which if often tied behind.

Member of Charles City County Committee of Safety, organized 17 DEC 1774; filed a Legislative Petition as a resident of Monroe Co., VA in 1812 stating that he served 7 years during which time he defrayed his own expenses serving as Judge Advocate to the Regiment, Judge Advocate to the Brigade, as well as Pay-master to each, also bearing a Capt.'s commission in the Continental Army; land bounty warrant application states that he served in the 2nd Virginia Regiment for the whole war; he was entitled to 4889 acres for his services as a Capt. And that a warrant issued for one half in his own right and one half to Benjamin W. LADD, his assignee. A Lt. William ROYALL received a warrant for pay and rations as an officer of the 1st Virginia militia to the South on 30 May 1781. His widow Anne (NEWPORT) ROYALL petitioned congress stating that her husband "served during the whole period of the Revolutionary War. He went in a Captain with his own company can came out a Majore, for which he never received ONE CENT and bore his own expinses." (Some times RYALL in the records.)

Size Roll of Troops join?d at Chesterfield Ct. House Since Sept. 1st 1780, Library of Virginia Archives. A William SCOTT, age 24, who was free born in Charles City and who was bound to Berry HARDEN [Littleberry HARDYMAN?], was among Negroes in New York City who sailed aboard the Rob Valentine to Nova Scotia, 22 SEP 1783. A number of William SCOTTs served at Valley Forge (4th VA, 1st VA,). It is unclear if any of these are this man.
