Filed pension applications stating that he was 57 in 1820 and had enlisted in 1776 under Capt. ROSE in the 6th Virginia; that he was in the battles of Monmouth. Stoney Point, and the Siege of Charleston where he was taken prisoner and held until he was exchanged at Philadelphia. Affidavits of Edmund BINNS, Richard WADELL, and Samuel LEONARD attested to his service. He stated that he was a farmer by occupation and his family consisted of a wife, aged 58, a daughter aged 17, and two sons over age 21. Charles City Court determined based on the testimony of John BOWRY and Edmund BINNS that Joseph. HILLIARD enlisted under Lt. Collier COCKE in 1776 on the Virginia line for three years and after being discharged enlisted under Capt. STOKES and continued till the end of the war; died before 16 JUN 1836 when he was certified in court as having served in the Virginia Continental Line; died intestate; certified as only heirs at law: wife (Francis M.) and 2 children; Benjamin Hll.LIARD and Sarah MOUNTCASTLE. On 16 FEB 1826, administration of the estate of a Joseph HILLIARD was granted to Benjamin HARRIS.

This may be the WILLIAM HOOD who filed a pension application as a resident of White County, IL who testified that he enlisted in 1776 or 1777 in VA in a Regiment commanded by Col. (John Neville) and that he was discharged in Williamsburg in the fall of 1779 or 1780.

Filed a pension application in 1833 from Barren Co, Ky stating that he volunteered in OCT 1775 as a private in the Charles City militia under Capt. John GREGORY and David MERRY, Lt. Maj. Stith HARDYMAN, commander, he was born in Charles City 15 JUN 1755 and lived in said county during the Revolutionary War, he joined the company at the Charles City Courthouse and marched to Williamsburg for the purpose of meeting Gov. DUNMORE who was endeavoring to destroy the magazine; he received unwritten discharge by disbandment in Charles City, having served to the best of his recollection four weeks in 1777 in the fall he again volunteered as a private in the Virginia militia for one year under Capt. Edward MARRABLE, Lt. David MERRY, in the same county and was marched to Williamsburg where he stayed about two weeks when he was marched back to Sandy Point on James River where he served out the year, in June 1777 he again volunteered in Charlotte Co under Capt. Thomas WILLIAMS and served two months as a sergeant; served three months in Capt. Gideon SPENCER company under Maj. John OVERSTREET; served other tours for which details not given; in 1784 he moved to Halifax Co, from thence in 1814 he moved to Kentucky.

His 74 year-old widow applied for a pension from Halifax Co, Va; affidavit of Joseph HUGHES, brother of Stephen, stated that he first enlisted as a minute man; that he was twice called up for about four weeks each time; then he enlisted in the regular army for twelve months and marched north; after his term of enlistment he was twice drafted and served two militia tours of three months each; married Tabitha FINCH 2 JAN 1788. There is a Private Stephen HUGHES who served at Valley Forge in the 1st VA Regiment in Callohill MENNIS' Company. He is shown as "Enlisted" in Feb. and March 1778 and as "Sick Present" in May and June 1778. This is likely the same man.

In court records of 15 AUG 1838 further relationships were given: children: William (died intestate under age 21); Betsey (widow of John DEAN); Fanny (dead); Robert PENNY (dead) and surviving heirs - Betsey, William, Nathaniel, Robert W. & Thomas. In court records of 19 APR 1855, Nathaniel PENNY is listed as only survivor and Elizabeth DEAN is now dead (intestate) and was nearest kin of Nathaniel PENNY; Thomas PENNY died intestate, without issue.

Applied for a pension in 1818, stating that he enlisted in Charles City Co in 1779, taking the oath of a soldier before William CHRISTIAN, a Justice of the Peace. He was then marched to Blue Ball, Pennsylvania. He and others were ordered back to Petersburg where he was enrolled in Capt. TALIAFERRO's company and was marched south and joined the 1st Virginia detachment under the command of Col. PARKER He continued with that corps until July 1781. He was discharged from service at Jamestown. He was in the Sieges of Savannah and Charleston. At Charleston he was taken prisoner and detained for 16 months. John BOWRY, Sr. made an affidavit stating that JOHNSON had enlisted in the time of the Revolutionary War as a soldier. Isham WHITTalso made an affidavit stating that Johnson enlisted in 1779, marched to Blue Ball then carried South and taken prisoner at the siege of Charleston. Died by 12 OCT 1843 when widow, Elizabeth applied for pension.

To the best of his recollection was born in Charles City Co., VA, but having no record of his birth is unable to state when. Resided in Brunswick Co., VA until the close of the war. Enlisted AUG 1779 under command of Capt. Joseph PEEBLES. Served 6 weeks in defense of Portsmouth and Suffolk, VA, 4 months marching to the relief of Charleston, SC, 5 weeks to guard the Fort occupied by the British at a place called Edmonds Hill, and a tour of 6 weeks to join Baron STEUBEN when the British were on their retreat to Little York. Resident of Carroll Co., TN at time of application.

VA, at the commencement of the war he moved to Casell Co., NC, his first service was as a volunteer in Georgia and then in NC militia. Pensioned for 5 month service as a private, 6 months as a Ensign and 6 months as a Lt

Member of Charles City County Committee of Safety, organized 17 DEC 1774. Captain of a Militia Company paid for service 29 MAY 1779. A David MINGE's will was probated in Williamsburg 07 NOV 1781, and his "body to be buried in the family burying place. Christiana MINGE, his wife, executrix for the estate of Capt. David MINGE, placed an advertisement asking for notification by those with claims against the estate, dated 04 MAR 1783, from "Waynoke".

Son CHRISTOPHER applied as a resident of Bedford Co., VA stating that his father was a Lt. serving as Paymaster for his regiment and that his father had married ANN AMMON(S) of New Kent Co. before moving to Bedford Co. MOON's Land Bounty Warrant application states that he entered into serice in 1776 and continued in service until the Battle of Guilford where he was KILLED in action. The affidavit of SAMUEL ARNOLD of Charles City stated that MOON was a Lt.on the Continental line from 1776 to his death, that they were contemporaries in service and lived in the same county, that MOON was married during the war. His heirs receiveD 2,666 2/3 acres of bounty land.
