Judge George L. CHRISTIAN, in a speech of 24 JUN 1910, told of Uncle Billy BISHOP, a Charles City slave who belonged to Thomas H. WILLCOX. Mr. BISHOP used to say that he was either Gen. WASHINGTON's or some other officer's bodyguard during the war. "Of course I never knew whether or not he was deceiving us

but I don't think he would have done this willfully. He was a kind, good old fellow, and his bearing and manners were as fine an example of dignity, courtesy and honesty as I have ever seen." A slave belonging to Thomas H. WILLCOX named BILLY BASHOP, presumably the man referred to by Judge Christian, died in 1858 of old age. However, one cannot help but wonder whether Judge CHRISTIAN got his "Uncle Billys" confused and was instead referring to William THOMAS who served Gen. Muhlenburg in a personal capacity. If the Death Register correctly recorded BASHOP's age at death (88) he would have been five years old when the war began.', 'Charles City: Some of its Noted Places and People and Personal Recollections of Some of These
