Listed as a runaway male slave age 35 and a cook who left with the gun boats in July 1863. Undated report filed pursuant to Act of March 28, 1863 by Francis W. Ware, Charles City Commissioner of Revenue, Auditor of Public Accounts: Runaway and Escaped Slaves, Receipts and Reports, 1863, Library of Virginia Archives. A few years earlier, this William Buck or the elder one was one of three slaves convicted of conspiracy to make an insurrection 03 JUN 1861. Buck was charged, along with two slaves belonging to Dr. Richard Epps, of conspiring "to rebel or make insurrection by conversing together about the Northern Army & their expectations of being set free & having arms put in their hands & their readyness to rebel against their masters." Thirty nine lashes was the sentence imposed on each slave. Charles City County Records, Library of Virginia Archives, Ended Causes, Box 33, BC#1044799. Edmund Ruffin wrote about this conspiracy in his diary on May 26th. Ruffin stated that the conspiracy involved slaves on both sides of the river and had been in progress for six to eight months. The conspirators allegedly made their plans under the cover of night meetings for pretended religious worship. At the time of the diary entry the responsible slaves had not been apprehended, but Ruffin wrote that slaves at Eppes Island and at Shirley were thought to be the most guilty. William Kauffman Scarborough, The Diary of Edmund Ruffin, (Louisiana State Univ. Press: Baton Rouge: 1976) vol II, p. 35. |

Edward "Ned" Christian was the husband of Sarah Hulett Christian and father of five children (Robert, Molly, Jacob, Alice and Lillian) born at Shirley Plantation. Family Bible Record, Charles City County Richard M. Bowman Center for Local History Archives. He appears to be one of two slaves purchased 28 DEC 1849 from Joseph Stamper Trustee for Dr. John F. Christian for the sum of $1,300. This interpretation accords with family oral tradition which says that he was brought to Shirley on a boat. The family Bible record lists his birth as 10 JAN 1828, although Shirley records show his birth year as 1830. He was listed as a runaway male slave age 30 who left with the gun boats in July 1863. Undated report filed pursuant to Act of March 28, 1863 by Francis W. Ware, Charles City Commissioner of Revenue, Auditor of Public Accounts: Runaway and Escaped Slaves, Receipts and Reports, 1863, Library of Virginia Archives. On the night of 18 JUL 1863 Ned joined approximately 18 other slaves in making their way out to Union ships in the James River. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Wabash and the USS Ohio. During the blockade of South Carolina he lost his left eye. U.S. Navy Widow's #17176. |

Siah Hulett Carter was a son of John Hulett and Molly Saunders and a brother (or half brother) of Martin and Sarah Hulett. At the end of the Civil War he married Eliza Tarrer, another Shirley Plantation slave. When Siah was enlisted in the U. S. Navy 19 MAY 1862 aboard the Monitor he was given the name Siah Carter. For the remainder of his life Siah used the last name Carter while his wife called herself Mrs. Hulett. Siah Carter received a military pension and following his death when his widow tried to obtain widow's benefits she had to prove that the man she buried as Siah Hulett was the same man as Siah Carter. The pension file includes affidavits of several former Shirley slaves. Navy Survivor's #4542. When enlisted Siah was described as 24 years old |

Pomeroy, Charles City County Richard M. Bowman Center for Local History Archives. This name appears to come from an Englishman indentured to serve Col. Edward Hill. The English John Roc, whose name is sometimes spelled Roch, Rock and Roach, also used the alias Royston or Royster. He was an auditory witness to a nuncupative will of George Harris on 24 MAR 1672. British Public Records Office. John Roc/Roach is also described in an extraneous essay at the back of the Charles City Militia Book which explains that during the period of his indenture he cohabited with a free negro woman and had children by her who took his name. After his indenture he married a woman named Royster who had also been indentured to Col Hill. Charles City Militia Book, Library of Virignia, Archives. |
