Dilsy Washington was born 25 MAR 1838 at Oak Hill Plantation, the daughter of Sallie White. During her servitude she was married to Prior Washington, who is also thought to have been an Oak Hill slave. Dilsy and Prior were the parents of Robert Fullerton Washington, born 18 FEB 1856, and Eldridge Atkerson Washington, born 09 AUG 1858. Both children appearto have died young. Dilsy was the sister of Manerva Hall, also an Oak Hill slave and wife of Peter Hall, John Tyler’s coachman. Some years after emancipation Dilsy moved to Massachusetts where she died. She left a will which provided for her body to be shipped back to Charles City for internment in the slave cemetery at Oak Hill. She also left money for a tombstone to be erected for the family Member mentioned. Charles City County Will Book 8, p. 174; List of slave birth dates, Major-Marable Family Papers, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Library, Colonial Williamsburg, box 7 folder 1.
