Nelly Holmes gave a deposition 17 AUG 1894 in which she stated that she was about 60 years old and a resident of Lee Hall, VA. According to her testimony and that of her brother Cyrus White she had been a slave owned by William M. Harrison and married according to slave custom to Cornelius Holmes. At the time of the marriage Holmes was owned by Sandy Irby, but he was later acquired by Harrison. Nelly and Cornelius were the parents of 5 children. After Holmes left with McClellan’s army she never saw him again. Holmes served on the USS Brandywine and following his discharge from the Navy he married a woman named Emma who was awarded the widow’s pension. U.S. Navy Widow’s #50749
