Thomas Binford, a lapsed Quaker, emancipated 23 or 24 slaves by the terms of his will which was written 08 JAN 1816 and recorded 20 JAN 1825. His will left all of his property to his slaves and provided that if they were not permitted to remain in the State of Virginia as free persons his executors were to sell his property and purchase land in a free state for them. Charles City County Will Book 3, pp 52-53. The emancipated slaves were transported to Ohio where land was purchased for them near Stuebenville. The community came to be known as Macintyre.
