Rachel Shields was a daughter of Walker and Mellvina Shields who died at the age of 6 in 1860. Her name appears on a list made by John Edmond Graves of slaves belonging to his father William Southall Graves, made some twenty years after the war in the belief that southern property owners would be compensated for loss of their slaves.
