According to family oral tradition Armistead Robb was brought to Charles City from Essex County when he was purchased by an owner here. Following the war his owner “gave him six acres of land but made him pay one dollar to say he bought it.” Family History written by Lillian Robb Jones, Charles City County Richard M. Bowman Center for Local History Archives. These details are sufficient to identify Robb as a slave belonging to Dr. William Upshaw who moved to the county around 1850, purchased Indian Fields Plantation and married Virginia M. Willcox. Following the war Dr. Upshaw deeded land to Armistead Robb.
