Mary Patterson was a witness deposed on 26 APR 1894 in Philadelphia, PA. She gave evidence in support of a widow’s pension application filed by Eliza Hulett. Patterson stated that she was 50 years old and that before the war she was owned by John Royal, who owned the plantation adjoining Shirley Plantation. Slaves from the Shirley and RIVERVIEW-DOGHAM quarters visited each other weekly and some times daily, accordingly to her testimony. Patterson further stated that she was present at the marriage of Eliza Tarrer and Siah Hulett Carter in Hampton, and that she lived at Bermuda Hundred for several years following the war, as did they. When the couple moved to Philadelphia, she followed them a year later. They remained lifelong friends. U.S. Navy Survivors #4542.
