Thomas Mayo was a 14-year old Indian brought into court 08 DEC 1690 by John Evans to have his age determined. The law of 1682 made servants tithable when they reached a certain age and required masters to bring children between the ages of 4 and 18 into court to have their ages determined. During Bacon’s war against the Indians and for a brief period thereafter it was lawful to enslave indians caught in hostile acts. Whether Thomas Mayo served for a term of years or was held in lifetime servitude is unknown.
