William Harris was born in Prince George County and brought to Charles City when William Allen Harrison purchased Westbury. On the night of July 18, 1863 he joined approximately 18 other slaves who made their way out to U.S. ships in the James River. He enlisted in the Navy and served on the USS Wabash until he was dsicharged in 1865. He married Phebe Ann Washington, formerly a Shirley Plantation slave. U.S. Navy Widow’s #17389.
