James T. Hall was born a slave at Oak Hill Plantation 29 DEC 1847, the son of Manerva Hall, also an Oak Hill slave, and Peter Hall, a slave at neighboring Sherwood Forest Plantation. He was enlisted in the 37th U.S. Colored Infantry Co. F. at Norfolk on 21 MAY 1864. He is described in the muster roll as 18 years old, 5’4 1/2″ tall, with dark complexion, dark hair and dark eyes.
