Methodist minister John Bowry emancipated a slave named “Charles” by deed of 16 OCT 1794, describing the slave as having been formerly owned by James Gregory and providing for the slave to be free on 01 JUL 1797. Charles City County Deed Book 4, p. 219. “Charles” is believed to be Charles Gregory listed as a free black head of household in the 1810 Census of Charles City County.
