“Aunt Rachel” the cook was a slave who belonged to William Southall Graves of Cherry Hall. A list was made by John Edmond Graves of slaves belonging to his father some twenty years after the war in the belief that southern property owners would be compensated for loss of their slaves. Rachell is described as a sister of Primus Green and for that reason is given the surname Green in this file. Rachel was listed as age 50, presumably meaning she was 50 in 1865.
