Solomon Dorillios, “a Negroe” was transported to Virginia by Thomas Phillips who claimed a 50-acre headright for his importation. The land patent was for land on the south side of the Chickahominy in what was at that time James City County, but is today Charles City County. Patent Book 1, p.216. Historians hold differing views on whether negroes imported to Virginia in the first half of the 17th century served a term as indentured servants for a term of years or were held in hereditary servitude. Thus, Dorillos may not have been a slave. Also, the patent of land in this county does not necessarily mean that Dorillos himself was brought to Charles City.
