Thomas Duling emancipated “my negro woman Mary and her five children, viz. Candish, Solomon, William, Christopher Columbus and Benjamin.” He also emancipated two men Dick and Moses. The emancipated slaves were left all of Dulings property. Charles City County Will Book No. 3, p 349. Mary gave birth to three more children LIGHTFOOT CHARLES, JOHN WASHINGTON, and NATHANIEL EDLOE before she passed away. The Overseer of the Poor bound out WILLIAM HENRY GOIN, LIGHTFOOT CHARLES, SOLOMON, and CHRISTOPHER to WILLIAM FOLKES. Charles City County Minute Book No. 2, pg. 223. In an separate action the Overseer of the Poor bound out BENJAMIN, JOHN WASHINGTON and NATHANIEL EDLOE to WILLIAM FOLKES. Charles City County Minute Book No. 2, p. 223. It appears that all of Mary’s children were given different surnames. CANDICE married MOSES GREEN, who is thought to be the same man who was emancipated, but other records claim he was free born.
