Ephraim Cary and Betsy his wife were slaves owned by John Tyler, Sr. of Greenway. They were emancipated by John Lewis in 1831 and filed a petition with the General Assembly 21 JAN 1835 for permission to remain in the state, stating that they were over the age of 40, childless and owned property. Ephraim is listed in an Inventory of Tyler’s slaves taken in 1813, as is Betsy and another slave named “Cary.” Charles City County Will Book 2, p. 261.
