Robert Cary executed a deed of emancipation for Robert Cary, his 40 year-old son, dated 20 FEB 1800. This is probably an example of “protective custody,” meaning that Robert Cary had purchased his son’s freedom. Charles City County Deed Book 4, p. 500. The deed was executed shortly before Robert Cary executed a will leaving real estate to his son David. David Cary was a brother of Lott Cary, although he may have had a different mother, as he approximately 25 years older than Lott. Charles City County Will Book 1, p.508.
