An “old” Claiborne was placed in charge at Sherwood Forest by Brig. Gen. Edward August Wild. W.H. Clopton to Julia G. Tyler, 04 AUG. 1864, Tyler Family Papers, Swem Library, College of William & Mary. The only elderly Claibourne in the 1870 Census of Charles City is Claibourne Carter who was 80 (born about 1790).
