Henry Black appears to be one of two males slaves whose escape from Sherwood is described in a letter written, but never sent, to the Commanding Officer U.S. Forces at Jamestown. The escape took place before DEC 1863 when Henry enlisted at Norfolk, Va. in the 1st U.S. Colored Cavalry. (See our data base of Union Servicemembers.) Henry apparently was a house servant as his occupation was listed as waiter. In the 1870 Census of Elizabeth City, Va. He was living in the household of Eliza Black and his occupation was listed as a servant.
