Husband of Philis and father of Nancy J. There were several Napolean Bates at Shirley Plantation. This one was a dining room servant who was elderly at the time of the Civil War and afflicted with consumption. Letter of 8 MAY 1864 from Fannie Nelson Carter to sister Lucy, states, “So Papa called up poor (Napolean) he is in the last stages of consumption though he is a most excellent dining room wervant and a great loss to us, and told him that this gentleman (Union officer) wanted him to go with him. Nat begged hard, but the Yankee was ___able and promised us his work of honor that he would return.” Charles City County Historical Society Newsletter No. 2 (MAR 1995).
